Chicago TARDIS 2024

The longest running Sci-Fi ever, and it is Doctor Who. I had seen it on our local PBS in the 70's, however I did not seriously start watching it until 1979, when friends kept talking about it. Needless to say I became hooked. In 1989 I took my son to see Colin Baker, the 6th Doctor, at the Holiday Inn, Harvey, IL (our first con). That was when Her Majesties Entertainment was running the Chicago show. So, there are embedded memories that I enjoy.

We were pretty faithful attending Visions who came after, then to the current Chicago TARDIS. But not as of late. I had to look back. I found that my bride and I last attended 2019. A bit of a shock in that a friend of ours commented to us this year that we did not attend last year, as if we had attended in prior years. Oops.

This year we did not participate in the craziness that we had put ourselves through in prior years. We took this year easy, laid back, take it as it comes. Enjoyable yes. Fully experiencing what goes on at this event, no. I felt a bit heart broken for not being apart of many activities. At the same time, I was grateful to have attended.

This event takes place over Thanksgiving weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). People arrive on Thursday to meet and socialize, and to get a quick meet and greet with any of the actors who are there. My bride and I drove there Thursday night to get our passes, and to be apart of this (next 7 photographs). Afterward we drove back home (coming back on Saturday).

Here are some photographs of that brief Thursday, and the Saturday that we attended. Remember, you can click on any of the photographs to enlarge, and use the ESC key to return to the blog.

Our new fur baby, 4 months old. His name is Chester. Bubba, who attended with us in prior years past away a few months earlier. Bubba enjoyed the excitement, especially K-9. Chester is still unsure.

Prior years we attended, the hotel was, well, a hotel. This time with the updates, they have also displayed their holiday spirit which I thought was nice looking. This next photograph really does not do it justice.

Saturday

As a "hobby" photographer, I enjoy photographing people and their costumes at cons. These and this con gives you a safe place to participate how you want to, which can make for some very interesting and cool costumes.

Mother and daughter (below).

Sylvester McCoy is probably the best Doctor Who entertainer you will find. He and Sophi Aldred were very characterish on the show, and more so after. In the two photographs that follow Sylvester is doing what he does, going to the audience to "field" questions, this time for Paul McGann and for himself.

Yes, costumes, very detailed and long hours in the making costumes. Some enjoy wearing while others enjoy making, oh and perhaps making and wearing. Yes, store bought is still acceptable here. Though is you want to set yourself apart, which everyone does want to be their own individual at this con, you go custom scratch make.

Can you spot the Bushby's!

This costume was the best I had seen this Saturday. Gotta love a Weeping Angel! DON'T BLINK!!!

After thought, it would have been nice to have seen / bought this Dalek for the Christmas tree.

One of the nice upgrades from years past, digital signs for each of the rooms. Nothing like that last positive confirmation you made it to where you wanted to go. Believe me, when you are getting your bearings, it helps!

For a few years that Doctor Who was not being produced, Big Finish and their Doctor Who audios did great to fill our thirst. They do many other audios, so please check them out.

Here the actors on the Doctor Who audios, on stage describing what is it like doing the audios, and to answer our questions. Some of these actors on the audios were in Doctor Who itself, which makes it special. And others are actors, of actors who we have seen on Doctor Who. A family thing, both for the actors and those who come to the con to participate and enjoy.

Oh, and Blake's 7 was another hit in Sci-Fi. I remember seeing the actors at Visions in the early 90's (and actors from Red Dwarf were there). As time moves on, they become fewer, which makes every bit of time we get to be with them . . . precious. Below are Jan Chappell and Brian Croucher who played Cali and Travis.

And we all know there are gamers out there. Chicago TARDIS has a gaming room for you to enjoy. This year they added two more games that just came out (not something you just pick up on Amazon).
