University of Chicago - Make The Best Of It

I do thank the University of Chicago for helping me through all of my health issues. They are good listeners, providers of information, they answer your questions, and they make sure I am involved in my own decision making. My requirements for quality of hospitals is, did they improve my outcome and experience. The University of Chicago does.

There have been multiple trips for multiple reasons the last few months. My cancer being at the middle of it. It does not feel stressful, nor like I am avoiding anything. I do find comfort in the drive to their various locations. It is peaceful, clears the mind, engages my visual curiosity of places I would have just passed on any other trip into the city, and now I get to see with a new lens and enjoy.

My route to and from the hospital, whether downtown at the River East location or to Hyde Park, entails taking Cline 912 to the Whiting Indiana exit getting off before I hit the toll road, then cutting through on Dicky Rd. to W 129th. I then take 20  until it intersects with 41, and follow 41 to my final destination. This saves a lot of money on tolls, and does take an additional 15 minutes or so. Being in a rush is not a priority. Enjoying the drive as I do is. I have always enjoyed driving.

Many times I see something different. I may even see a path I have not traveled that looks interesting, so I re-route myself on the way home. I do not do that on the way to the hospital because I still need to get there on time. That became a problem only once so far, day dreaming, enjoying the ride, and forgetting to turn off at the Museum of Science and Industry for the Hyde Park location. You would think I would not miss such a large and favorite landmark for my turn, but I did.

I enjoy the very early appointments too. I get to beat some rush hour traffic, can find close parking to the front door as it were, and become mesmerized at the early morning scenery. It is much different going home with the sun up which gives different detail. Even going to and coming back the weather can make the scenery different. For me that makes for a fun trip. Oh, one stretch of the drive in the morning I enjoy is S Southshore Dr (not a typo), at the South Shore Cultural Center. They have a radar speed sign, that if you pass it at or under the speed limit, a smiley face illuminates. I cannot help but smile in the morning when I pass that. On the way home I never get to enjoy that because of all the traffic going above the speed limit.

Here are photographs from my December 29th trip, starting with some morning photographs of the BP Refinery in Whiting.
