Polk-a-Dot Drive In on Route 66

Took a special trip to the Polk-a-Dot Drive In on Saturday for a burger. A very cool place to go to, for any length of drive. You can check out a previous blog post by clicking here.

Bombers BBQ

(Note: This blog is of their previous location. New location is just West. Address end of blog)

Out with the old and in with the new. Bombers BBQ is moving to another store front (has moved at the time of this posting). Basically right around the corner. The address is near the bottom of this blog.

I have been to a few placed in NW Indiana that serve BBQ. Some specialize in it, other do not however say they have the best. For me, Bombers rates the highest on my list of all of them. Taste, service, cleanliness, and very consistent with their product.

My bride Christi enjoys the their brisket platter with mac & cheese and fries, while I enjoy the full slab of St. Louis ribs (because I want to take some home), with mac & cheese, and slaw or fries.

Here are some photographs of the original store . . .

Tonight (1/21/19) we went to the new location. A lot more room! The food was great as expected. Christi had the brisket patter again, this time with pork & beans along with sweet potato fries with aioli. I switched up and had the shrimp with mac & cheese, and the sweet potato fries with aioli. The food was great, and most surprisingly the sweet potato fries and the aioli were out of this world! The shrimp were all fully shelled with BBQ sauce. It has a little crunchy something on it (it is not breaded shrimp) that helped hold the BBQ taste when you ate it. It was like heaven.

Here are some photographs of the new location. It was too cold for me to stand outside late at night to photograph the outside.

The center benches have removable sections for wheel chair access. Cool idea!

So if you are hanker'n for some BBQ, go check out Bombers BBQ. (Plenty of parking lot North of Ridge off Harrison Ave.)

New Address is:

Pre-Arbor Day 2018

I spend the Sunday before Arbor Day to go by the old house in Glenwood to photograph the tree that my son Nick planted from a seed, circa 1992. The tree is still there, and much bigger than the 12" that he planted.

I then took my bride Christi to Aurelio's in down town Homewood. I first went to Aurelio's in the early 70's, when my friends dad Tad invited me with the gang. Back when Aurelio's was located on Ridge Road. Lets just say that was also when I found out Pizza was part of all the food groups.  Later Sanfrantelo's popped up in Glenwood, and gave Aurelio's a run for their money, and sometimes more.  However, Aurelio's has made it through the test of time because of quality and price.

Today Aurelio's is located on Harwood Avenue in Homewood. I remember going to this area when I believe it was Hines lumber. (I could be wrong.) Later the building housed a Schwinn bicycle sales and repair shop. Aerelio's obtained it, and made it into the restaurant we know it as today (the late 70's).

Along with the photograph above, here are some photographs I took of my bride and of Aurelio's.

Check them out when you get a chance. You will not be disappointed.

Gerry Hundt at Doc's

My bride Christi and I had been watching Gerry Hundt's solo gig live on Thursday nights at Doc's. Gerry is a accomplished blues player. We just had to get out there one evening and see him live. This evening Christi could not make it, so I went by myself.

Here are some photographs of the evening.

While there, I partook in the BBQ ribs with a side of macaroni and cheese, and some Louisiana coleslaw. Wow!

Super Submarine

I had never had a sub from Super Submarine in Hammond before. Christi had brought some home for me and left it in the fridge. I cannot say I am a fan of refrigerated subs of any kind.

One day she brought one home from me to eat when I came home from work. It was good! So we went back on a Saturday and I had another.

Each person has a personal favorite they like to go to when it comes to food, movies, shops in NW Indiana. Much of it has to do with us being brought up in the region, spending time at these places, creating memories. Some has to do with us just taking a chance on something in the region and finding what we have missed out on all these years.

In the case of Super Submarine, Christi and her mom have gone there pretty near since they opened in 1977. The shop has developed a strong dedicated following over the years, and still is able to bring new customers like me, to the counter.

When you have a chance, go check them out . . .

This next photo was taken across the street where we parked.
