"Artist Originals" Session 10

Life. How do your portrait it; how do you discuss it? My bride Christi has improved my life. Bubba (my dog) has taught me how to improve my life. How to be a better human. Stories, perceived or real, can pass along what was to describe life. Some stories are told around the fireplace. Some are told on the front porch. Some in a small social setting. Some are read in books. And finally, told (and some times unspoken) through music. All portrait life because that is the foundation. There is usually some take away for the audience, for them to reflect on their life.

The person telling the story has the most investment. As a listener you have the prerogative to take what you are listening to and to do with it as you will. Tonight as Mark Mybeck went through his set list, I caught myself feeling like I was elsewhere. The first set was like a family gathering. The second set was like a rush of thoughts moving in different directions. Not chaotic thoughts, just intent in many directions that tied together. Both sets were life. It could have been a remembrance, whether perceived or real, but do you really know? The fact is the music brings emotion from the storyteller to you. How you choose to interpret can be strongly influenced by the teller, or by you the listener.

This is not to say Mark's set list was intended at all to take you on the trip I was on. What Mark's list was for sure, was his stories, told and played in a way that allowed you to do with it what you wanted to. No group head banging conformity (you could also say head nodding, foot stomping, finger tapping . . . remember the scene from Dead Poets Society in the court yard?). No local talking (first set), and an exuberance of noise while he played the second set because of an anxious human vibration in the air.

Here are some photographs from the evening. Enjoy!

And for some further entertainment, check out Bill Hayden's vid of Mark . . .

"Artist Originals" Session 2

"Artist Originals"
Session 2

James Gedda

A bit out of context to "Artist Originals", however, relevant to music. I am listening to "The Day After Woodstock" Dick Cavett Show 19th of August 1969 while putting this blog together. It seems that we are all fighting something. Music seems to define this, to give it some synergy toward for or against. Music gives us a chance to reflect, realize, and hopefully do something for change whether it be more towards the good, or at least away from evil.

Music is written from reality, whether it be experience, thoughts, emotions. How we relate to it is always up to us. It is storytelling, passing onto generations what was felt at the time.

The "Artist Originals" sessions at Austin Community Tavern are bringing to us local musicians to play their original written music. Actually bringing us back to music roots, with current musicians and lyrics.

James has a deep rich voice that brings such clarity to his song. Felt on the context of country, James put forward his passion for his music this evening.

Everyone is unique, as is James Gedda.

Enjoy the photos!

"Artist Originals" Session 1

"Artist Originals"
Session 1

Mark Mybeck

So, we have a new thing in the town of Steger, "Artist Originals", happening every Wednesday at Austin Community Tavern. Any musician who would like to play, or try out their solo originals in front of an audience, are welcome to sign up. Contact Austin Community Tavern through there Facebook page. There address is at the end of this blog.

The first installment of what is planned to be a long and never ending series came from Mark Mybeck, member of Nomad Planets. I have known Mark for over 10 years now, first meeting him and Nomad Planets at Beatles Fest where they played. Mark is a song writer, however he states he is a bit timid when it comes to playing solo in front of an audience. Well, after the first two songs he shook off his small time jitters and gave us an excellent performance.

Mark is a story teller for sure. He talks to you as if we are all family living in the same house. He describes how or why he wrote his songs. When he sings them there is a lot of deep meaning brought out. He does open himself to us. A couple times I teared up, it was that heart felt.

So, Mark is our first "Artist Originals" in the series of sessions. Sort of like the "Office Sessions" I had gone to in Chicago in the past. A very friendly and safe environment to play your original music, solo.

The brain child behind this is Phillip Panozzo, owner of Austin Community Tavern. His personal desire is to offer a venue for musicians, and in this case for Wednesday nights, solo musicians of original music. The establishment is very home like. The waiting staff super customer friendly. There is food and of course adult beverages.

Note too that this show started at 7:00 pm and was an 1-1/2 hours long. Very easy to do in an evening and still get some sleep for the next day. Enjoy the photos!!!
