Thinking about light, we seem to not talk about it much, yet there is so much to talk about. Obviously photography is to capture light, or it's absence. But what happens when you turn off the light. What do you feel? What is your experience? And what is the experience when it is gradually brought back on?
Zoom, you go through a tunnel and light ceases. Gradually you reverse back, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as it were, with some relief but also with a different train of thought. One that makes you happy the light is coming back to you, and your beliefs, your internal energies now mean something different to you.
Humans and nature require light to survive and thrive. Our accelerated destruction of the ozone however is allowing more harmful UV-B radiation to touch us. So we block out the sun on us through sun screen, clothing, staying indoors. Opposite of what is needed to survive and thrive. Seeing the light is to energizes us, not make us hide and wilt.
Photography captures light, or absence of. It seems though the higher the technology of photography the lower ability there is to capture light as compared to the older film technology. The addition of man made light offers an even bigger challenge with frequency compatibility of the source to the camera sensor's ability to sync. Our human capability, visual dynamics, to see light coming and going at various frequencies, to sync, is so astonishing. It is a miniscule experience of a moment, seeing our life coming and going through a light tunnel. It penetrates our being, seeing light. It makes us happy and secure when the light keeps coming back.
Though man made gizmos may have visually polluted our landscape, we have still created beauty in light to energize us, to see the light tunneling through to us in awe for imagination. We smile when it comes through. We feel delight. We rethink ourselves and the world around us. We rejuvenate as if we were in the "safe sun", and create positive emotions that we store and put to good use when we need them. Like making deposits into your own emotional bank account for us to draw from when we need to be uplifted (Stephen R. Covey).
There is a lot to be said experiencing light first hand. Not through others recreations like photography, but in person. "Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum", or any other show, need to be experienced in person. Walking through the path for Illumination was spectacular this night. It felt so new, a journey I had never been through, yet during the light of day have taken the path many times. The absence of light, the creation of light, the movement of light, releases a thrill for your imagination and to your mental health, depositing in that emotional bank account. Though many memories of times are kept inside, I still choose to capture best I can, the emotion running through me through photography. This is my secondary method of withdrawing from my emotional bank account, should I loose my account number.
I hope you enjoy the photographs. Please make a personal visit. Energize and deposit in yourself.
